Confirmation: An Affirmation of Baptism by Good Shepherd Students

An online Confirmation Service was not what we expected when we started our “Faithwalk” program back in September, but that didn’t stop God from working in truly powerful ways.

These words from the prophet Isaiah were our theme verse for the DELTA retreat this past fall, part of our “Faithwalk” Confirmation program at Good Shepherd. We had no idea just how important these words would be as the year went on…

“When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up; the flames will not consume you.”

(Isaiah 43:2)

So much has happened over the last several months. Our lives have been full of uncertainty, heightened anxiety, and even disappointment as plans changed, routines were disrupted, and events were cancelled. Our Confirmation Service, typically held in mid-April, was one of those annual events that had to be postponed.

Yet the words of Isaiah 43:2 still hold true – God promises to be there, not IF we go through troubles, but WHEN we do. We decided to hold an event that would focus on the truth of that promise – the truth of God’s continual presence, no matter the circumstances.

Like so many other parts of our life, we shifted our Confirmation Service to an ONLINE format. We hosted 6 services across 3 days, June 8-10. Students were able to invite family from across the country just by sharing a ZOOM link!

It was different, but it was still special. It was formal, and yet it was unique. It was different, but it was so sacred. In front of friends and family, students gave a public affirmation of their faith and confirmed the promises made at their baptism. We took time to pray for each student individually as well. Parents, grandparents, and other family members offered up beautiful prayers on behalf of each of our students.

An online Confirmation Service was not what we expected when we started our “Faithwalk” program back in September, but that didn’t stop God from working in truly powerful ways. This online event marked the start of a new chapter in the faith journey of these students. We look forward to seeing how these students to continue to seek to love and serve God!

Congratulations to the Confirmation 2020 Students
