Friends, we are a church that is FOR everyone, whether they are close by in Naperville or anywhere around the globe. Recently, several members of our church were able to go to Guatemala, including Jeannine Allen, our Missional Engagement Minister. Jeannine took some time to reflect on the experience, and I would love to share it with you….

God’s Eyes by Jeannine Allen, Missional Engagement Minister

Our team returned safely home although I think each of us would agree that we are not the same people. We arrived in Guatemala with willing hearts and open hands.  However, nothing quite prepares you as you witness God at work, using our team’s gifts so beautifully, and bringing about transformation both in those serving and being served. 

One of our team members shared a transformational moment for him.  He shared that at first, all he could see was the poverty, the trash, the deplorable living conditions, and what the people were lacking. But at the end of the week, he didn’t even notice those things anymore, all he saw was the beautiful Guatemalan people.  People that had become like family to us through our shared experiences that week. To me, it was a beautiful analogy of first seeing the world through our eyes, and being transformed to see the world through God’s eyes.

 It’s hard to understand the extreme gratitude, faith, love, and joy the Guatemalan people have amid their daily struggles! Witnessing this made each of us grow in unexpected ways in our gratitude, compassion, and love.  Coming together to make an IMPACT resulted in a family that now has a secure home, a school that is being expanded to meet the needs of the community, under-resourced teachers being equipped, hungry people, being fed, children receiving sponsors, and the love of God was present in every moment! Church, this is the work we get to do together!

Thank you, Good Shepherd, for being a church and a people that is willing to partner with God in the work he is doing in our community and around the globe!
