Shepherd’s Heart 2/23/24

Last Wednesday night, I shared with those gathered for our Lenten service the power of story. Our lives are rich with narratives, and each story we encounter has the potential to shape, mold, and transform us. We find ourselves influenced by a myriad of tales—from the cultural narratives that surround us to the origin stories of our faith, to the personal histories within our own community. Often, these stories enrich us, fostering growth and goodness. Yet, some stories can misshape us, pulling us away from the image of Christ. Reflect on the narratives you have lived by: those that have formed you, those that have informed your understanding of happiness and a good life.

As a teenager, I remember being caught up in a tale of false measures of worth: popularity, possessions, and appearance seemed to define success. But the gospel of Jesus Christ invites us to live within a different story.

Christians are indeed a storied people. We move to the rhythms of the Christian calendar, entering the story of God, allowing the Holy Spirit to shape us within that sacred narrative. Our story began with the breath of God, whispering life into the vast emptiness, bringing forth light and life at the dawn of creation.

As we journey through this Lenten season, I invite each of you to delve deeper into the story of God. Let us rend our hearts and prepare ourselves for the solemn journey to the cross and the triumphant joy of the empty tomb. May we immerse ourselves in the practices that draw us nearer to the heart of God—be it through the diligent reading of the Gospels, the communal worship in Lenten services, or the quiet contemplation of new prayer practices.

Each of these disciplines invites us into a space where we can reflect on the narratives that have shaped us and discern how we might live more fully within the redemptive story of Christ. How might our lives tell a story that resonates with the grace, love, and sacrifice we find in Jesus?

As you consider the stories that have formed you, I encourage you to also think about the stories you are forming. In your interactions, in your service, in your very being, you are a living narrative of God’s love. This Lent, may we commit to being characters of grace, protagonists of peace, and narrators of hope in the ever-unfolding story of redemption.

May the Spirit guide you in this season of reflection and renewal and may the peace of Christ be with you all.

From my heart,

Pastor Tara Beth
