Shepherd’s Heart 3/8/24

Dear ones,

Living in a land abounding with abundance, it’s easy to assume my cup should overflow perpetually. Surrounded by everything one might wish for, from material wealth to endless opportunities, my life epitomizes privilege in every conceivable aspect. Yet, privilege and abundance don’t inherently equate to true fulfillment or blessing. The essence of real blessing transcends the tangible; it’s rooted in heavenly wealth and the transformative power of God’s Kingdom.

Reflecting on the Beatitudes, we’re offered a profound insight into who receives God’s blessings. Jesus highlights the blessedness of the “poor in spirit,” “those who mourn,” “the meek,” and “the persecuted.” This narrative doesn’t romanticize suffering, nor does it suggest these states are desirable. Instead, it reveals that those in adverse circumstances, yet who lean on God for their strength, hope, and provision, are blessed. They embody the spirit of Jesus, persisting in following him while owning little more than the clothes on their back, uncertain of their next meal.

This past week, I’ve had the privilege of immersing myself in the community of the Beatitudes at Cherish Watoto in Nairobi, Kenya, alongside my husband, Jeff, Ryan Hammer, and Jeannine Allen. Observing my teammates engage with and learn from these children, I’ve witnessed a mutual ministry that breathes life into our hearts.  I’ve watched each of my teammates taste and see the blessings of God. I think I could speak for all of us when I say, we are experiencing a revival of our own through the ministry of these children. That’s right – the ministry of these children to us.

Yes, it’s true that Cherish Watoto is one of our major mission partners at Good Shepherd. Yes, it’s true we minister to them through our relationship and our financial gifts and sponsorship. Yes, it’s true that we built a school through your generosity. Knowing that, you might think that I came here to minister to the children and staff. While I hope that’s true, God has shown me that I am here for another reason – to be encouraged and ministered to. Watching children who own nothing but the clothes on their backs sing praises to Jesus with joy has reminded me again of the source of blessing. Watching children come to Jesus with joy has reminded me that turning to is simple and untethered to the world. It’s no wonder Jesus said, “Let the children come to me, for theirs is the Kingdom.”

Watch a slice of heaven HERE!

Soon, we will return and tell the stories of what God is doing here. Many of you already know this story and don’t need me telling you, but for others who don’t yet know, we can’t wait to tell the story. The seeds of the gospel have been scattered at this school, and the harvest is plentiful. Soon, we will tell you about all the ways you can partner with God in the harvest, and I believe that you will experience the same kind of revival we have experienced this week.

From my heart,

Pastor Tara Beth
